We are being rude, insensitive, and uncultured there."It was then that the organization of Ukrainian nationalists became the only defender of Ukrainian interests. This explains the role which nationalist leader Stepan Bandera and his Ukrainian Insurrection Army (UIA) (commanded by Shukhevich) played in Western Ukraine.
In 1944, Eastern Ukraine welcomed the Red Army, but Western Ukraine was much less pleased about the restoration of Soviet power. Resistance was massive; there was a real guerrilla warfare.
