The Nazi sign, which translates as "Work makes you free", disappeared between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. local time last Friday from the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp near Krakow.

The sign was found in a small town in northern Poland, sawn into three parts, each containing one word. Five suspects, aged from 20 to 39, were arrested while heading to the North of Poland to catch a Sweden-bound ferry.

According to police, none of the criminals are members of a neo-Nazi group. However, all had criminal records.

Polish media said the sign was stolen for an unknown collector, who ordered it on the Internet.

Several people will share a reward of around $40,000 offered by the Auschwitz museum for the recovery of the sign.
